An unusual ending
At the beginning of the game, the character wakes up after a heavy drinking binge. They don't know where they are, or even more so, who they are. Their memory is a blank slate. In addition to figuring themselves out, they'll also need to solve a murder.
Disco Elysium: Final Cut always allows your choices and actions to direct the plot, and any number of different paths to find answers are available. You and your partner/voice of reason/video game character must complete a series of tasks—namely, solving a murder—but you're free to decide how you do it.
Your primary actions in this world are examining the environment for clues or objects and interacting with people to gather information. These actions can trigger skill checks, which determine the player's progress. Failing a check will often hinder your progress, but most story-related tasks can be repeated later, giving you the opportunity to obtain various items or learn new information.
Disco Elysium has a very forward-thinking philosophy—even if you fail a check, the outcome is usually informative and often very funny. The developers warn that the game is intended for adults, as it contains scenes of tobacco, alcohol, and other illegal substance use, as well as crime scenes.
